How do I enroll my child in the Sunnyside School District?

Children in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades should be registered at the district office, 1110 South 6th Street (in the Lincoln School building). Upon registration, your child will be assigned to an elementary school based on his or her home address. Students in grades 5 or higher should register at their respective school buildings.

Please bring your child's birth certificate, immunization records and proof of address when you register. State law requires minimum immunization requirements for all public school students. If your child attended school in the Sunnyside School District the previous year, registration is not necessary. For more information, please call Enrollment Specialist Charla Graff at (509) 837-5851.

How do I find out about my child's bus route?

To determine pick-up time, look under the route schedule for your child's school. Find your road and address and note the corresponding estimated time of arrival and pick-up. All bus schedules can be found here. Your child will ride the same bus number to and from school. In the afternoons, the majority of routes will drop off students in the same order they are picked up. There may be a few exceptions to this rule.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call the bus garage at (509) 837-2471 for further assistance. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

How does the school district determine school boundaries?

Each student's home address is the deciding factor for elementary school placement. Each year, the Sunnyside School District is growing in leaps and bounds. If the enrollment trend continues over the next five years, the district's student population will increase to more than 6,000 students.

The district continues to research and plan expansion and construction projects to keep up with the growing population. The school board of directors has adjusted the boundaries to ensure that each of the elementary schools is full, but not overloaded with students. Students who currently have waivers to attend schools outside their home boundary will be allowed to continue attending their current schools. From this time on, however, no new waivers will be issued.

"We are confident that for the new lines to work for everyone, we must remain within the boundaries," said Superintendent Rick Cole. "We can't make exceptions. Unfortunately, that means that some students may end up going to schools that are geographically further away from home, but we had to adjust the boundaries to accommodate all students, without overloading one school over the other. "In the long run," said Cole, "we feel this is the best solution for all students to keep class size at a minimum and encourage the best learning environment for all."
