state school nurse organization honors dr. rick cole with prestigious award
Sunnyside School District Superintendent Dr. Rick Cole was recently honored by the School Nurses Organization of Washington (SNOW) as their “Non-nurse Administrator of the Year” at their annual conference on Oct. 16 in Everett, WA.
Dr. Cole was nominated by the district’s nurses earlier this year in an essay outlining his support of the schools’ nurses though: administrative leadership, professional development, advocacy, community involvement and research. In their nomination essay, they write, “We believe he is a strong advocate for school nurses and has shown this in many ways.” Adding, “…he understands that there are more and more health compromised students in school full-time, and he wants the Sunnyside School District to be a leader in the state, as well as the nation, in nurse to student ration, because it is important to the students success in school and in the future.”
Of winning the award, Dr. Cole stated, “I’m very humbled and honored to win this award. My primary focus has always been student achievement, and our district’s nurses play a very integral role in that. Ensuring that our students stay healthy, and that they are treated when they’re injured or ill, is very important in making sure they are ready to learn each day.”

Outlook's mrs. quigley featured on kapp news!
Outlook Elementary's Mrs. Barbara Quigley was recently featured on KAPP News, talking about her 53 years of teaching first grade in the Sunnyside School District. See the story here.
Thank you, Mrs. Quigley! We are very fortunate that you continue to enrich the lives of Sunnyside students.
Welcome back for the 2009-10 school year!
Welcome back to another exciting year at the Sunnyside School District. We’re glad you’re here! We are ready to start the school year. Our administrators, faculty and staff are committed to providing Sunnyside students with a first-class educational experience, in a safe and effective learning environment. While we continue to see improvement in many areas, we know that there is much more work to make certain that 100 percent of our students succeed. Ensuring that ALL students will meet benchmark standards is the sole focus of our district. This may seem like an unattainable goal, but it is not. The road to achieving that goal may be long and hard, but it is reachable. By continuing to build a coherent system, training our teachers in the best instructional practices, learning “what works” in districts similar to ours, and—most importantly—building relationships with parents, we are taking great strides toward achieving that goal.
It is important for parents/guardians to understand that their children’s educational journey does not take a break at the end of the school day or during the summer months; it is something the parents/guardians must be deeply involved in as well. The following link is to a site which lists numerous tips for parents to utilize in helping their child with homework. Homework Tips for Parents. I would ask that parents/guardians take that advice, and work with your children daily to help them succeed in school and life. I realize that we all live busy lives and time like that can be hard to come by; but I promise you, when you see your child graduate from high school and go on to bigger and better things, it will all be worth the hard work.
Sincerely,
Dr. Richard D. Cole
Superintendent
